When the Leaves Began to Turn is the first episode of gen:LOCK Season 2. It premiered on November 4, 2021, on HBO Max.
Summary[]
Julian Chase narrates the current events of the series, how the Union has vengefully overtaken most of the continental USA over time. This time, with their massive army of Nemesii.
In the present, Chase and the team return to the Polity HQ in Los Angeles from another battle against the Union. As the Gen:LOCK team reaches the base, both Chase and Kazu get into a heated argument about the use of Mindscape's Mind Sharing in their fights. Meanwhile, a projected visual of Marc Holcroft giving a speech about the Polity's plan for a Martian expedition plays across Los Angeles. Although Holcroft's message isn't well-received and its reaction from the public is overseen by Marin from the Polity HQ. Joined by Holcroft, the two then talk about the Union's plans to attack the base within 48 hours with their nanotechnology and how to handle it. Eventually, the Gen:LOCK team arrives in the room and is debriefed by Marin about the upcoming against Brother Tate's forces.
At the Anvil, Nemesii overtake the base, while Tate briefly watches some intel he's received of Holcroft trying to pitch his Martian expedition. Amused that Holcroft's plans are in his own words "Smoke and Mirrors", he discusses future Union plans with Brother Sugiyama. He also feeds Mr. Cook, his pet koala, some eucalyptus leaves with the help of his personal nanotechnology called Flow.
Meanwhile, the Gen:LOCK team try out the new customizations Cammie gave the team so they could customize their hubs to reflect their personal styles. Val and Cammie have a brief heart to heart until Kazu and Chase reignite their mind share argument with each other. From there, both Vale and Cammie try to mediate the situation and paint a more positive spin on the negative aspects of the ability. On the other hand, Chase maintains his cynical disposition about the upcoming battle and his beef with Kazu over mind sharing. They all then return to their respective hubs, which all except Chase's are invaded by Cammie's bunnies. Within Chase's hub, which is styled like his old family's apartment, accompanied by two AIs that resemble his mother and sister. Right as Chase sits down on his couch and has Dri play his dad's favorite music, a knocking noise comes from behind him. Chase, however, tries to drown the sound out by playing the music louder, but it doesn't work until he's faced with a big ominous-looking door with a skull resembling Nemesis.
Somewhere in the Polity base, Henry and Fatima talk about Dr. Weller's dream of unlocking Gen:LOCK. A fact which, they hope to use to reawaken the comatose Leon August. Able then appears before the two informing Fatima that Marin requests her presence. When the two meet, Fatima tries to reason with the agitated Marin over her failure to unlock the Gen:LOCK secrets and copy the team's consciences. She demands that the doctor get her the Holon that she wants or be left behind and dismisses her. With Fatima out of the room, Marin orders Able to covertly spy on her. Down in the hanger area, Chase visits his old body and is soon joined by Cammie and he asks her to help him gain access into Caliban in order to unlock Dr. Weller's secrets. It's then that the Union make a surprise attack on the area with the Nemesii attacking the city itself. Preparing themselves for the upcoming battle, Cammie advises they Mind Share, as Chase is haunted by the knocking of the door. Marin vocal about wanting her holon army, Able reports that Fatima has created a program that blocked the copying process of Gen:LOCK-compatible minds which were later deleted. Fatima soon realizes this as Leon life support signals show that he's died.
Outside, the Gen:LOCK team and the Vanguard face off against the Nemesii. When Kazu is in a pinch, Chase overcomes his apprehension with Mind Sharing and does it with Yasamin and Cammie to rescue their ally. They do so and their teamwork impresses Marin deeply who asks Able to relay a message to Fatima. Able does so and Fatima escapes when soldiers try and apprehend her, when she confronts a scientist who tries to upload the copies into the Holons. Once again, the soldiers cut her off and warn her, but she's revealed to be a hologram. Back on the battlefield, the Holons with the Gen:LOCK data uploaded to them swarm the battlefield and act as suicide bombers against the Nemesii. Holcroft commends Marin for her work on the battlefield and hopes to hear more good news, while Marin vows to get the Anvil back from Tate. As the holons pull back, the Gen:LOCK team ponders who are piloting the Holons before returning to base. Eventually, Cammie manages to hack into Caliban, and both Chase and she enter it to find a mini Caliban and a copy of Dr. Weller', who enjoys some tea. The Dr. Weller the two meet is called Dr. Weller's Knowledge and he and Chase talk about the latter's dealings with the knocking from a door. Chase also expresses his fear of becoming like Nemesis, to which, Weller's Knowledge notes a high probability of a mental collapse due to Chase transferring to a machine body. Chase then recalls the Battle of New York City, however, Weller's knowledge corrects him claiming there was an incident provoked by the Polity 20 days prior. This leads Chase to ask, what that event was.
