Sometime before the start of the series, Yaz served as a pilot for the Union. However, at some point she realized she outed her parents as intellectuals in the Union, so they took them.

She left the Union, seeking asylum in the Polity, but was arrested and imprisoned in the Mesa Detainment Center. There, she was identified as gen:LOCK compatible, at which point she was recruited to the program by its director, Rufus Weller, becoming the second person in history to achieve gen:LOCK after her fellow recruit Julian Chase.
